I saw a commercial on TV yesterday about Lap Band Weight Loss Surgery, featuring this woman who complains that her stomach “roars like a lion constantly, saying – feed me – feed me”.

Anyways, since I’m always trying to get around having to eat right and exercise to lose weight, I decided to hit the Internet to get the scoop.

Come to find out, this surgery really isn’t the best option when you can stand to lose only 10 to 20 pounds (back to diet and exercise!).  This type of obesity surgery is instead designed for obesity patients with a body mass index (BMI) of 40 or greater – or between 35 – 40.

During this laparoscopic (pinhole, keyhole, minimally invasive) surgery, a surgeon inserts a gastric band (an inflatable silicone prosthetic device) which is placed around the top portion of the stomach.

The overall result of this obesity surgery is that it reduces the stomach capacity and restricts the amount of food that can be consumed at one time – causing considerable weight loss.
