Fast loading web pages while surfing the Internet may have more to do with your web browser settings and preferences than your Internet connection speed.
Try these easy Firefox tweaks and you’ll see that you’re surfing the Internet from 3 to 30 times faster!
To get started, open your Firefox web browser. In the address/location bar type [about:config] and then press your Enter key. (NOTE: DON’T TYPE THE BRACKETS.)

Tweak #1:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.pipelining]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #2:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.pipelining.maxrequests]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name and change the value from 4 to a higher number anywhere from 10 to 30. I set mine to 30.

Tweak #3:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.proxy.pipelining]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #4:
In the Filter bar type [network.dns.disableIPv6]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #5:
In the Filter bar type [plugin.expose_full_path]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name in order to change the value from false to true.

Tweak #6:
In the Filter bar type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create a new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer.

In the New Integer value box type in [nglayout.initialpaint.delay] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [0] (that’s a zero) and click OK.

Tweak #7:
In the Filter bar again type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in [content.notify.backoffcount] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [5] and click OK.

Tweak #8:
In the Filter bar again type [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help]. Now, you are going to create another new Preference Name with an Integer Value. To do this, right-click on this line under Preference Name and select New, then Integer. In the New Integer value box type in [ui.submenuDelay] and click OK. Then in the Enter Integer value box type [0] (that’s a zero) and click OK.

Now, close your web browser and restart it. You’ll see how much faster web pages are loading. I sure did.
Let me know if these tweaks increase your Internet browsing speed. Know of any other tweaks or tricks? Let me know and I’ll add them.

1Thanks for the excellent, step by step directions, you made it very easy! I have so many tabs, and sidebars open that I found FireFox did get slow sometimes. I restarted, opened a bunch of pages and notice a difference all ready.
You get a big thumbs up from me and I’ll be back to read some more.

Firefox3 Beta 5 may have some of these tweaks already done. All you can really do is check and then see for yourself if your browsing speed has increased.

9this does speed up the loading of pages, but sometimes it can make your firefox unstable. when i did this, it kept freezing up and i had to close firefox with the task manager (windows vista). it works, but be careful, and change it back if you have problems.

10I just did all of these tweaks and now Java doesn’t work. So heads up. I’m not sure which one messed it up, but in the Java Control Panal when I check the box to enable Java in Firefox it says it’s unable to change the browser settings because of the permissions. I have undone all the tweaks (as far as I know) and still can’t get it to enable. If anyone knows how to fix this or knows what’s wrong please let me know.

13All’s great, but what I don’t understand is, why do you always want to go to [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help] before creating a new entry?
That can be done by just right clicking anywhere within about:config screen.

63If your browser seems to getting bogged down, edit the following tweak by only increasing the number to say 10 or 12 instead of 30 like I use.
Tweak #2:
In the Filter bar type [network.http.pipelining.maxrequests]. Then, double-click on this line under Preference Name and change the value from 4 to a higher number anywhere from 10 to 30. I set mine to 30.

If these tweaks are not working for you, simply change them back to your original settings.

66Nice, very nice, I see a big speed improvement, however FF crashed 4 times in a row right after I applied the changes, I revised them and I did everything right, anyhow now it seems stable and the crashes could be related to something else.
It would be nice to add a small description of what these parameters do, some are self explanatory but others are not.
Thanks for the tips

70Just saw this comment by :TheMystical”, and thought I’d clarify.
“Nice, very nice, I see a big speed improvement, however FF crashed 4 times in a row right after I applied the changes, I revised them and I did everything right, anyhow now it seems stable and the crashes could be related to something else.”
…………..
The crashes are related to memory usage……..FF uses an enormous amount of memory. If you continue having problems, switch to FF beta 3.5—–all memory issues have been fixed in that version.

74One thing,if you use Kaspersky 6+,or NOD32 antivirus,DONT engage pipelining.Because both are used as a proxy,it actually slow down the machine. The pages loads much slower.
But if you dont use them,it speeds things up dramatically.

84I know, I end up using opera more often, its memory footprint has never gotten bigger than 80MB while FF was well over 400MB with the same # of tabs opened.
I’m gonna try the new FF when it’s out of beta, I don’t like betas that much.

103The tweaks worked fine, but I still have a problem before and after tweaking: I have two commonly used sets of 4 tabs combined into different tab-folders. When I try to open these tabs using Open All in Tabs, the Loading phase goes on and on, taking minutes before any of the tabs is displayed. Sometimes the title of the web page is displayed, but the contents are often not filled in, even after several minutes. This did not happen with Firefox 2. Any suggestions?

106This works but you dont need to go any higher than 8 on the max pipelining requests as this is the max setting so going any highrt will not do anything here is a full tutorial http://www.nettechguide.com/how-to-speed-up-firefox-page-loading-times/
This should make firefox waaay faster for all those with broadband! if you dont want to alter all of the about config settings yourself you can just download fasterfox plugin from mozdev.org which does the same thing.. but you should be able to do this mod yourself.. enjoy!

109It does work A LOT better! But I noticed one problem.
With network.http.proxy.pipelining TRUE it seems images load slower. I set to FALSE and they load much faster. And I know its not my speed because I have 16meg internet.
Also, if you have a problem with Vista try leaving network.dns.disableIPv6 False.
Hope this helps. If I’m wrong then sorry

120For clarification there is some confusion and lack of definition to how and why you are applying these tweaks.
FYI…Tweak #5 is user information (verbose) rather than a speed performance tweak. It changes whether or not you will be able to see the full path to each plugin file while viewing the [about:plugins] page instead of just the file names.
FYI…Tweak #6 should really be exclusive only in creating [nglayout.initialpaint.delay] as a preference which is not associated with the [network.protocol-handler.external.ms-help] preference as it is an ms-help htm/html file specific function. The same goes for Tweak #7 [content.notify.backoffcount] and #8 [ui.submenuDelay] all separate functions. To say filter a specific preference out and then create a new preference from that is not an association. All you need to do is left-click from anywhere on the about:config page to create a new preference regardless of what you are viewing at the time the preference you create is applied and functions on it’s own merit.
Tweak #7 [content.notify.backoffcount] will not function without adding [content.notify.ontimer] as a new preference with a “boolean” type and a value of “true”.
Might I suggest all of you take the selected preference names within each tweak and visit kb.mozillazine.org. Search for the kb articles relating to each preference name for clarification and corrections. Hope this helps those interested.
