Although being mean, nasty and rude can be loads of fun, I DoFollow now – do you?
If you don’t know what I’m talking about – sit up and pay attention.
Wordpress by default, just like other blogging platforms, has automatically been adding the “nofollow” microformat extension to all links from user generated content such as comments and trackbacks – thus giving no credit to these outbound links. Which basically means, these links are not being recognized by Google or other search engines that would otherwise help increase pagerank and popularity.
So now, on the rare occassion I get an accidental visitor to this blog and they take the time to fill out the form and leave me comment, I’ve installed a plugin that automatically removes the WordPress “nofollow” tags/attributes that link to their website.
If you want to be a generous blogger (like me) and encourage more comments and discussion on your blog, you can download and install one of these Plugins too. Andy Beard features the Ultimate List of Nofollow & Dofollow Plugins.
What’s more, there’s a No NoFollow| I Follow| Dofollow community on Bumpzee.com where can also get one of those UComment – IFollow graphics for your site.

2Yes, I’m pretty sure Blogger does the same thing. Use the link to Andy Beard’s Ultimate List of Nofollow & Dofollow plugins. You’ll find plugins for Blogger.

3I think it’s a great plug-in, but the only thing you have to worry about now is getting lots of spam comments from people trying to get some free PR juice from your site. As long as you can keep that in check (Akismet does a pretty good job at that), you should be golden!

9[...] and make it several comments if you like. You should of course have a page marked Nofollow-DoFollow Policy and let them know your posting policy. It is no different from a brick and mortar store [...]

12Having dofollow is good in many cases, but of course forces the blog owner to watch comments more closely so that spam comments don’t come through.

13That’s very thoughtful of you to do this. I started doing this on some of my blogs and I’ll see how it effects them before I push the plugin out to them all.
Thanks for sharing the link love!

16Not only is this a kind contribution to your readers, but it definitely encourages posting. Yes, I found you through Google, and here I am posting. I don’t necessarily check for the “nofollow” tag, but I hope that most attempt to take it off. This encouragement helps everyone involved, as long as the comments are moderated and you don’t find a site that could hurt you by linking to them.
Thank you for this!

17It is ture that fewer outgoing links and therefore less “link bleed”, leading to better Google page rank. A little sweetener goes a long way, and I really appreciate blogs that do this. But I believe people should be rewarded some credit in return for their contributions. Thanks!
